The 2027 Social Security wage base is $192,300 — who pays more, and when the cap lands

SSA raised the taxable maximum from $184,500 to $192,300 for 2027, faster than the 3.6% COLA. Here is the extra tax by salary, the paycheck where Social Security stops, and the earnings band that now pays almost nothing extra.

On October 14 the Social Security Administration announced that the taxable maximum — the salary above which the 6.2% Social Security tax stops — rises from $184,500 in 2026 to $192,300 in 2027, an increase of 4.2%. Benefits rise by a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment. The two move separately: the base follows the national average wage, the COLA follows consumer prices (CPI-W).

If you earn less than $184,500, nothing changes for you. If you earn $192,300 or more, you pay $483.60 more in 2027, and your employer pays the same again.

The extra Social Security tax, by salary

Salary2026 Social Security2027 Social SecurityExtra in 2027
$100,000$6,200.00$6,200.00—
$150,000$9,300.00$9,300.00—
$184,500$11,439.00$11,439.00—
$192,300$11,439.00$11,922.60+$483.60
$200,000$11,439.00$11,922.60+$483.60
$300,000$11,439.00$11,922.60+$483.60

The most anyone pays goes from $11,439.00 to $11,922.60 — the figure SSA itself states. Self-employed people pay both halves, 12.4%, up to the same base.

When the “bigger paycheck” arrives

Above the base, Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches it, and every paycheck after that is larger. A higher base pushes that moment later. With 26 equal paychecks a year:

SalaryLast paycheck with Social Security, 20262027
$200,000#24 of 26#25 of 26 (later)
$250,000#20 of 26#20 of 26
$300,000#16 of 26#17 of 26 (later)
$400,000#12 of 26#13 of 26 (later)
$500,000#10 of 26#10 of 26

The shift is never more than one paycheck, and at some salaries it is none — the last deduction just gets larger. The case worth noticing is $200,000: Social Security now runs through paycheck #25, leaving only 1 bigger paycheck at the end of the year.

The band that pays the least payroll tax is shrinking

Between the wage base and $200,000, a single filer’s next dollar carries neither Social Security nor the Additional Medicare surtax — only the regular Medicare tax. That threshold is written into the law and has not changed since 2013; the base rises every year. So the band narrows: $15,500 wide in 2026, $7,700 in 2027.

Over ten years the base has grown from $127,200 to $192,300, up 51.2%.

What this does not tell you yet

This is Social Security only. The IRS has not yet published the 2027 income tax brackets and standard deduction, so a full 2027 take-home figure would be a guess; the calculator stays on 2026 until they are out. For how the cap behaves this year, see the 2026 wage base article.
